Since 1996, April 24 has been set aside each year to commemorate Metz Yeghèrn (the Great Evil), the genocide of the Armenians.

In April 2000 a group of scholars from Italy, led by Pietro Kuciukian of the Unione Armeni d'Italia (Union of Armenians in Italy) visited Armenia and Yerevan to attend the ceremonies.
